Pervez Musharraf to resign as army chief and takes the oath of office

It has been predicted for quite some time now that this would take place as it was rumored last week that Musharraf could be sworn in as civilian president by last Saturday. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf will resign as army chief and take the oath of office, being named the civilian president this coming Thursday, just two days away.

The spokesman for Musharraf, Rashid Querishi as well as Army spokesman Major General Wahid Arshad amde the announcement to various news organizations on Tuesday.

It has been predicted for quite some time now that this would take place as it was rumored last week that Musharraf could be sworn in as civilian president by last Saturday.

It has all been confirmed now though as he will take the oath of office as civilian president on Thursday.

Former Pakistani prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto both registered to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections on January 8th.

Mr. Sharif stated he would not be a part of any government serving under Musharraf.
