Tokyo - Yasuo Fukuda is set to be named the new prime minister of Japan on Tuesday.
Fukuda will take his first role and act as prime minister of Japan to create a cabinet which will confront an opposition force which wants to push for an early election.
Liberal Democratic Party members chose the 71-year-old Fukuda as its leader on Sunday. They are hoping that this decision will bring new life into the party which has been suffering all year long.
They have been hampered by the election defeat under Shinzo Abe and have also been hit hard with scandals.
Fukuda has many good relations with the Asian neighbors of Japan and will be voted in as prime minister by parliament’s lower house.
Ichiro Ozawa leads the main opposition party the Democratic Party.
Democratic Party lawmaker Kenji Yamaoka stated that “The LDP may deceive the people or they may take makeshift measures, but this will not last long. We feel strongly that a change in administration should take place as soon as possible.”
Fukuda has stated that he wants to talk to all parties including Democrats to work out and discuss policy.
