A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck Indonesia’s main island, Java, at 5:05 p.m. UTC. at 5:05 p.m. UTC.
No immediate reports on damage or casualties. No tsunami is expected as the depth of the quake exceeded 280 km.
Because of the location and of depth of the quake, a tsunami is not likely.
‘It’s too deep, so there’s no potential for a tsunami,’ Anas, an agency official, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. ‘And so far, there’s no reports of damage.’
The quake struck at 12:04 a.m. in the Java Sea, 100 kilometres northwest of Cirebon and at a depth of 282.1 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey website.
