According to new research released, the number of hurricanes which hit the United States may drop due to rising ocean temperatures from global warming.
Global warming is causing ocean temperatures to rise, and in turn could cause the number of hurricanes which hit the U.S. each year to drop significantly.
The study was published in the Geophysical Research Letters and goes against past research which states that global warming actually causes more hurricanes to form.
The new study was done by oceanographer Chunzai Wang from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as Sang-Ki Lee of the University of Miami. They looked at hurricane records from over 150 years.
What they found was that decline occured in hurricanes making landfall in the U.S. as the oceans warmed up.
This means global warming may reduce the number of hurricanes hitting land in the U.S.
