The world’s oldest orangutan, 55-year-old Nonja, died at the Miami zoo.
The 55-year-old Nonja is believed to be the oldest Sumatran orangutan in the world. Nonja was born on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and has lived in Miami since 1983.
On Saturday morning the Nonja was unfortunately found dead.
Spokesman Ron Magill of the Miami Metro Zoo stated “Everybody’s very sad, especially with an animal like an orangutan. You see a lot of yourself in these animals. The great apes are our closest relatives.”
Nonja was found to have suffered from a brain hemorrhage. She passed out and vomited due to the condition and died from choking on the vomit.
The usual lifespan of a Sumatran orangutan is 40 to 50 years.
