The FBI says violent crimes have increased in the United States

Violent crime incidents were up and were defined as murder, rape, aggravated assault, or robbery. They rose by 1.41 million in 2006 of 1.9%. Washington - The FBI releases statistics on Monday which revealed that in 2006 the violent crime increased in the United States, marking the second year in a row this took place.

Violent crime incidents were up and were defined as murder, rape, aggravated assault, or robbery. They rose by 1.41 million in 2006 of 1.9%.

Murders themselves rose by 17,034 or 1.8%.

These past two years have not been very positive after declines were seen for over a decade according to the FBI.

Many blame the record low numbers for the reason they are now going up though as Northeastern University in Boston criminal justice professor James Alan Fox stated “When you’re that low, the only way to go is up.”

The violent crime rate peaked in the early 1990s and has declined each year until 2005.

Justice Department spokesman Biran Roehrkasse stated that the overall crime rate has still dropped to its lowest level in 30 years.

An increase in gang activity along with a decrease in law enforcement and gun-related issues is to blame for the increase according to Fox.
