It seems like a meaningless lawsuit, but three people from Northern California are suing Apple, Inc. because of iPad overheating problems.
The complaint was filed in federal court in California on July 23 by a trio of iPad users, Jacob Balthazar, Claudia Keller, and John Browning.
The basis of the lawsuit is that their iPads are overheating too quickly while using them in the sun. According to the lawsuit filing, the iPad does not “live up to reasonable consumer’s expectations created by Apple.”
The users in question, and others have noticed that when the iPad is used in direct sunlight and summer weather, it will display a message, “iPad needs to cool down before you can use it.” While I don’t doubt the claims of the users, others in the technology industry have lauded the iPad as one device that doesn’t get hot at all. Tech pundit Leo Laporte noted on his TWIT internet podcast that using any device in hot conditions for a certain period of time will cause it to get hot. Apple puts a safeguard on its devices that will shut them off once they get too hot. This protects the user and the device itself.
It will be interesting to see how or if this lawsit progresses, and what witnesses might be called and what data might be released by a tight-lipped Apple.
Apple is still feeling the pressure after antenna issues with the latest iPhone.
