Researchers have believed in the past that animals, such as deer and cattle, use the magnetism of the Earth in order to tell direction.

In the past though, it was thought that they did it to position themselves along with the winds.

New research though from Sabine Begall of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany has found that they line up on the North-South axis.

They discovered this by looking at over 8,500 images of cattle and deer herds from Google Earth.

Researchers have stated that humans, and other creatures may also have their own magnetic compass.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
