California-The current Great White Shark is an awesome powerhouse, but its ancestor is believed to have been the most powerful mouth on earth.
Scientists working from the University of California, the Department of Industries Fisheries of Australia, New South Wales University, and other scientists working cooperative have uncovered some startling new evidence.
X-ray images and other scientific methods have reconstructed the sculls of a number of different ancient great white sharks.
Using different digital techniques they have reconstructed the virtual 2.4 metre male great white shark scull and they are able to project the power of the bite of such a creature.
Computer modeling further illustrates the massive power of such a creature, many times more powerful than the current Great White shark.
The bite force of the ancient shark is thought to be about 1.8 tonnes, which is nearly 3 times the bite force of an African lion.
The lead author of the new study from University of NSW, Steve Wroe said the animal is without a doubt the hardest biting creature found on earth.
“Nature gave it with enough force to bite and kill the huge animals that were its prey,” said Wroe.
