Siberia- Mother nature was the start this morning in the wee hours, and the rare total solar eclipse took center state in areas of the far north.
A swath across the Arctic, Siberia, Greenland, and parts of Russia and China were totally dark for a period of about 9 minutes, while other areas near the swath experienced between 20 and 50 percent totality.
The event is where the moon passed between the Sun and the Earth and it is a fairly rare event, especially coming just 8 days before the start of the Chinese 2008 Summer Olympiad.
In ancient times total eclipses were considered sinister, dark magic or bad omens in China, but the event this year is being held by some as a good omen because of its happening 8 days before the Summer Olympics being held in China.
The number 8 is a lucky number believe by many in China as a good number.
Many people who are fans or stellar sky watchers traveled thousands of miles to experience the total eclipse, while others stayed home and watched the event, broadcast live on the Internet.
