Intel, which has its world headquarters in Santa Clara California, picked up a point in overall microprocessor market share in the worldwide market.

Advanced Micro Devices was a winner also with a two-point market share gain over the last 12 months.

The overall market continues to be dominated by Intel, who owns nearly 80 percent of the worldwide market.

The 79.7 percent share of the market that Intel does own has been fluid over the last couple of years, with rival AMD and other manufacturers providing stiff competition as the price and availability of microprocessors continue to improve.

Intel boasted slightly larger numbers a year ago but still retains a lion’s share of the semi conductor and microprocessor market, while AMD has worked hard to gain in niche computer chip areas.

Both companies have experienced strong numbers as the worldwide demand for computer chips, especially newer specialized chips continues to be strong. AMD continues to chip away at the market gaining a point or two each year.
