The European Union has decided to allow cell phones during flights over Europe, with the services kicking off this year.

The decision was made on Monday by the European Union to make the 27-nations the first region in the world to allow cell phone use during flights.

The EU has lifted the bans on cell phones in the sky.

The services will work by allowing cell phone calls to connect through an on board base station. From here, this is linked to a satellite which is then set to ground networks.

The flight captain has the ability to turn off the service anytime.

EU officials have stated that the system has been tested and calls will not interfere with flight navigation or anything of that nature.
