Microsoft’s Office Open XML (OOXML) has become the official ISO standard. The document format received support from 86% of the bodies that took part in the vote.
The ISO approval is huge for Microsoft, as they have been pushing for it for quite some time now.
The ISO approval for Microsoft means that they will likely be able to make far more inroads into government software, which relies mainly on open standards.
This approval will allow Microsoft to continue to be a huge competitor in the government software market.
A 2007 vote failed to grant the OOXML ISO approval, but Microsoft did not give up, continuing to push and fight for votes.
The format may not be the favorite, as it has been the victim of criticism from technical experts, but OOXML is now the ISO standard, officially.
