Scientist Mary Lou Jepsen, one of the designers of the XO laptop which is the laptop the One Laptop Per Child group sells, has started a new company, Pixel Qi, just two weeks after leaving the OLPC.
The company is working on putting together a $75 laptop, and is also working on bringing the low-cost and low-power screens to mainstream laptops, digital cameras, cell phones, and other devices.Jepsen is hard at work already on her new company, Pixel Qi, which has big plans to compete with the OLPC.
The Pixel Qi website states “What computing can be, the XO laptop was just the first step.”
If Jepsen is successful at putting out a $75 laptop, it could be a fatal blow to the OLPC group since the XO laptop is currently priced around $200, way above the $100 originally planned.
The company stated “Pixel Qi will give OLPC products at cost, while also selling the sub-systems and devices at a profit for commercial use.”
