The Sony PlayStation 3 console is beginning to make a comeback in the next-gen console war after its most recent price drop as it managed to sell more consoles than the Nintendo Wii in Japan for the first time last month.
This is huge news for Sony as their PlayStation gaming division has been having a lot of trouble with the PS3 since it launched last November. Sony’s big sales increase can be greatly attributed to the release of the new 40GB PS3 which retails for $399 in North America and Y40,000 in Japan.
According to data from Enterbrain, the PS3 sold 183,217 units in November in Japan compared to 159,193 for the Nintendo Wii.
This is big for Sony as the PS3 is a huge part of the gaming division of the company. The gaming division is weighing heavily on the overall profit growth of the company.
Analysts have stated that the gaming unit of Sony is not expected to start garnering profits until March 2009. This Christmas season though is big for Sony because if they can come out with momentum them the Sony PS3 could have a chance to topple the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii in the next-gen console wars.
Nintendo’s launch of Wii Fit for the Wii is a bold move from the Japanese company who hopes to bury the competition, the PS3. It is expected to help sales for the Wii through the holidays.
