The NASA Phoenix Mars Lander landed at around 8 p.m. Eastern time, ending a 10-month trip from Earth to Mars going 422 million miles.

The soft landing forced the Phoenix to go from 12,000 mph down to 5 mph in just a few minutes, using a parachute, and thrusters to land.

The Phoenix performed the first-ever soft landing oN Mars, going from 12,000 mph down to 5 mph in a matter of seven minutes.

The Phoenix will now dig through the soil and ice on the northern pole of the red planet to try and search for any signs of life, or evidence that it could support life in any way.

The landing was monitored at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
