The deadline to submit applications to bid on the 700MHz spectrum auction in January passed on Monday.
The group set to take part in this auction is beginning to take shape as there are expected to be a few shocking entries. For the most part though the big players are Google, Frontline WIreless, AT&T, as well as Cox Communications. They all submitted applications on Monday for a chance to take part in the auction and bid on the 700MHz spectrum.
The Federal Communication Commission announced that the 700MHz band would be made available to companies as they can bid on it to use it to build wireless voice and data networks. This comes as they made the announcement that everyone would move to digital television in 2009.
The deadline was set for 6p.m. ET Monday. Under the rules of the auction no company has to actually announce that they have any intention to bid. They do though have to announce that they are taking part in the auction in some capacity.
Sprint, Time Warner Cable and Comcast all stated that they would not submit an application to bid on the spectrum. Many other companies could have applied and it is just not known yet that they have done so. Let the guessing game begin as the January auction nears.
