New ads for gastric bands are targeting teens. Some worry that these ads are giving teens the idea that this is the most effective route to take for weight loss.
According to reports, the NYU Langone Weight Management Program has plans to release a list of approved bariatric clinics that are geared toward treating overweight teens. This list will go out later this year.
If the procedure receives a nod from the FDA, then insurers will be more likely to pay for the procedure for teens. This would put the cost of the procedure at around $2,000 to $4,000 for an insured patient. Uninsured patients will pay around $15,000 for the procedure. According to reports, they make up around one third of the people who undergo this type of surgery.
Some fear that these companies will begin to target teens through television and radio ads. These ads have been proven to be effective with this age group.
“There is no guidance or regulation on (direct-to-consumer) ads to young users,” the FDA said in a statement.
Currently there is an Allergan-sponsored clinical trial taking place that is studying the use of bands on teens. If the procedure wins the support of the FDA, the device would be available to teens as young as 14.
