Toronto - A study has found that Ginkgo biloba does not prevent dementia. Ginkgo biloba is an herbal extract that many people had thought was a possible treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
Dementia is a disease is which elderly people begin to forget who they are. It is a heart breaking disease to cope with because your family member will eventually not remember you or the fact that you are a member of their family. The disease robs dementia sufferers of not only their memory, but of their entire lives and personal identities. Can you imagine not knowing your own name or not remembering your children or family members?
The study consisted of a group of 3,069 volunteers. The volunteers were aged seventy five or more. The participants were asked to take an herb or a placebo. The study spanned approximately 6.1 years. Five hundred and twenty three of the study participants had been diagnosed with dementia. Two hundred and forty six of those who had been diagnosed with dementia had taken a placebo. Two hundred and seventy seven participants who took Ginkgo biloba had been diagnosed with dementia.
This study proves that even if you take Ginkgo biloba you still run the chance of developing dementia. There is no cure for dementia. It is a disease that affects more than five million people in the United States of America. Hopefully, scientists will be able to find a way to prevent elderly people from developing dementia. You lose so much when you grow older; the least that you should be able to have is your memory and identity.
