The algae, which thrives in warm humid temperatures, is common in many areas of reservoirs or lakes, and it is a sign of water with a high bacteria count.

Swimming in the water that has this type of algae can result in several different health conditions that are unsafe, including red skin, cramps, diarrhea, nausea and other symptoms similar to influenza.

Livestock and pets also are susceptible to sickness if they are allowed to drink water that has blue green algae growing on it.

The algae actually thrives in warm wet conditions, and when the bacteria count of lakes and bodies of water gets high, the algae is most likely to thrive.

Water that has this type of algae on it is unsafe to drink, and most of the time appears cloudy or will have a tan, grey or blue green tint to it.

If you encounter this type of algae in water that you are swimming, you should immediately get out and watch down with fresh water.

This type of algae can cause rashes, skin irritation and other health issues, and should not be allowed to have contact with the skin.
