The new research examined and tracked 659,164 women in the Ontario region.Toronto- There is a risk that women that have diabetes during pregnancy in the gestational form can later develop Type II diabetes.

According to a new study being published by the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences, the University of Toronto, and Mount Sinai Hospital, the risk for women that had no pre existing diabetes but then developed gestational diabetes was higher.

The new research examined and tracked 659,164 women in the Ontario region.

Of these patients nearly 21,823 developed what is known as gestational diabetes during their pregnancy, and these women were later shown to be at risk 20 percent higher for developing Type II diabetes than those women that never had gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes itself was also revealed to be much more common among Mothers who were older when they gave birth, and among women in urban and low-income neighborhoods.

This study did not take any size, obesity, ethnic or fasting glucose issues into consideration for this particular research project.

The precise reason for the elevated Type II risk is unknown, but the researchers note that during pregnancy women with gestational diabetes show different abnormalities of a metabolic nature that are similar to Type II diabetics.
