Illness Strikes Patients In 34 States

Washington, D.C.-The overall outlook for the Salmonella outbreak currently gripping the United States is still very grim.

The numbers of patients that have contracted the Saint Paul version of the Salmonella disease has risen to 756 people, and there have been people struck down in 34 different states since the first cases showed up in April.

The Centers for Disease Control said that so far there have not been any deaths, but that 95 different people with the disease have had to be hospitalized.

The source of the contamination is still elusive, it is believed to be linked to different tomatoes but a precise cause has not yet been pinned down.

Investigators are working furiously to try and find a cause, but as the cases have mushroomed to more than 750 the chances of finding the overall link grows dimmer.

The state with the largest number of cases is Texas, with 330 people that have fallen ill with the disease.

New Mexico is the second hardest hit with nearly 80 different people infected.

Raw Roma, round and plum tomatoes are believed to be the source, but it has not been narrowed down or proven as of yet conclusively.
