Washington, D.C.- In additional investigation into early reports that PVC shower curtains released toxic fumes the results has been confirmed.
Last week it was revealed that testing on various types of new PVC shower curtains released toxic fumes into the air, by a group that does consumer and scientific testing.
The results were confirmed by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice in independent testing conducted over the weekend.
In PVC shower curtains purchased at random from five different retailers, Sears, Bed Bath and Beyond, K-Mart, Target and Wal-Mart, there were substantial amounts of at least seven different toxic fumes detected.
Chemicals such as toluene, methyl isobutyl ketone, xylene, cumene, and ethylbenzene were found on the shower curtains that were purchased at these major retailers.
It is believed that this “new shower curtain smell” could be a risk especially for people with respiratory issues or breathing concerns, according to the group’s report.
The new report is subject to a certain amount of controversy. Some leading scientists disagree, and maintain that the amount and concentration of these chemicals is so low that it would not provide any risk to anyone in the vicinity of these products.
