The robotic brilliance of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. was displayed in their creation of the surgical two armed robot the removed the brain tumor from a 21 year old woman at the University of Calgary last week.

Young 21 year old Paige Nickason is recovering well after being operated on with the assistance of the robotic surgery device. The robot, directed by a skilled Surgeon removed the brain tumor from Ms. Nickason at Calgary Foothills Hospital.

The surgery was the first of its kind and demonstrates the ability of having a precision surgical robot in modern medical surgery that requires great precision. The robot, directed by the surgeon, operated the instruments and the success is being heralded as a breakthrough in robotic surgeon directed operations.

The robot system combines a very refined manipulator system along with advanced magnetic and visual resonance imaging. The arms are fitted with sensors that have different types of neurosurgical tools operated by the surgeon.
