They stated that the birth control patch is to balem for an increased risk of blood clots

The Ortho Evra patch works by giving out estrogen. The group states that women who absorb too much estrogen are at a higher risk of these potentially fatal blood clots.

The head of the research group, Sidney Wolfe, stated “The considerable safety concern of high-dose, variable estrogen exposure tips the balance of risks and benefits against the availability of Ortho Evra as a contraceptive.”

This builds on a previous study which linked the use of the patch to an increased blood clot risk in women ages 15 to 44.
