According to researchers, commonly used artificial blood or blood substitutes actually increases the risk of death as well as heart attack in patients.
For the longest time, it has been hoped that these artificial blood fluids could replace the need for blood donors.
This is not the case though as they have been found to increase the risk of death and heart attack.
Researchers from the National Institutes of Health as well as the group Public Citizen reviewed studies based on five different artificial blood products.
They found that the use of artificial blood increased the risk of death by 30% in patients, and increased the risk of heart attack 3-fold.
They also took a shot at the FDA, stating that if they reviewed the studies earlier, they could have prevented many deaths from these terrible side effects.
The data has been released in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Monday.
