Every single year more than 7,000 children get rushed to emergency rooms after suffering bad reactions from taking cough and cold medicines.

This report has been released just as the Food and Drug Administration is thinking about whether or not they need to further restrict use of cold and cough medicines on kids.

The study was done in a sample of 63 emergency rooms in 2004 and 2005. They found that most of the kids who had the worst reactions were between the ages of 2 and 5.

Joshua M. Sharfstein, leader of a coalition who petitioned the FDA to place further restrictions on these medicines for kids stated “This is a lot of trips to the emergency room for products that have no known benefit. It’s time to pull the plug on the marketing of these products.”

This comes just after the FDA urged parents not to use the products on children under the age of two.
