A Youtube clip that shows a woman talking into a cell phone has gained 1.5 million views. The clip comes from a 1920s era Charlie Chaplin film and has been hailed as evidence of time travel. The picture shows a woman talking into what looks like a cell phone released sometime after 1995.
Although many people who commented on the video are eager to accept the time travel phenomenon, it is unlikely the woman is using a cell phone. Motorola demonstrated the first mobile phone in 1973, 50 years after the film’s release date.
A more likely explanation is that the woman is using a vacuum tube hearing aid, which first appeared in the 1920s. An earlier clip from the same film shows her using an earphone, which suggests the character was supposed to suffer from some form of hearing impairment. The clip appears in the additional DVD footage of the silent film, “The Circus.”
