Academy doubles number of best picture nominees

The president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stated that there will be 10 nominees in this years best picture class in Oscar race. The Academy chose to double the number of best picture nominees.

The Academy says the decision has been made to acknowledge a broader range and “more populist” films. With double the number of films contending for the top prize in film, the category is now sure to include blockbusters, comedies and animated movies that have often snobbishly been deemed too common to compete.

Academy resident Sid Ganis, said it is a move directed at drawing more of a viewing audience to the telecast, next March. Moreover, it marks a return to an earlier format, when, decades and decades ago, more than five films were nominated for best picture.

It is the first time since 1943 that 10 films will be in the running and has been called “a return to the past”.

The academy’s decision is mostly considered in Hollywood as a win for the major studios, who have made noises recently about distancing themselves from the awards as their megahit products have been brushed aside by intellectual fare distributed by independents and smaller companies.

Academy president Sidney Ganis said in its statement: “Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize.”
