The Golden Compass managed to take the top spot at the box office over the weekend but did not have the massive opening which many had hoped it would, as it opened by taking in $26.1 million.
The weekend receipts came in at $26.1 million which is far from breaking any records for the film starring Nicole Kidman. New Line Cinemas, the distributor of the film, was hopeful that the film would turn out to be a true blockbuster success as the film cost $150 million to create with immense special effects and such. The film fell short though as the film based on the novel by British author Philip Pullman has a long way to go after a slow opening week and big openings next week such as Will Smith’s I Am Legend.
Coming in second place was Disney’s Enchanted which lost the top spot taking in $10.7 million in ticket sales.
Coming in third place was This Christmas which is a story about an African-American family who meets up after years for the holidays. It took in $5 million.
Fred Claus starring Vince Vaughn took in $4.66 million in fourth place. Coming in fifth place was Beowulf at $4.4 million dropping from 2nd place last week.
A slow week at the box office overall but things should pick up next week with the highly anticipated I Am Legend starring Will Smith.
