The Hong Kong Supermarkets are a very popular foreign tourist destination in China. If you could shop for luxurious brand name items at a very low rate with barely any tax then why wouldn’t you? I’m guessing that’s what drew the Chinese tourists in on the tour bus the days they were forced to shop.
The tour guides take the tourists to the most expensive place to shop and make a percentage off of it. The aggressive tour guides tell the tourists to shop here or you won’t have a place to stay tonight; shop here or you’ll go hungry. The Chinese tourists are basically threatened to shop where the tour guides want them to. If they don’t buy enough it can get nasty.
Over 170 people have complained about this in 2010 alone. It has gotten so serious that the NTAC or National Tourism Administration of China has been considering issuing a Hong Kong Travel advisory. This matter has gone so far that a 65 year old man died of a heart attack after being forced to shop. The Travel Industry Council in Hong Kong says a new code of conduce guide will take effect Friday. Honestly is that all that’s being done here?
