A Greensboro,NC teenager is recovering from a shark attack that occurred at Topsail Island while vacationing with her best friend’s family.
Carley Schlentz, 13 was in the ocean Friday afternoon when she felt something grab her ankle. She claimed that she thought it was her best friend’s sister at first. However she soon realized that it was not a joke when she felt something sharp around her foot and saw a black tail splash in the water.
She looked down and realized that something was very wrong when she saw the cuts on her foot. According to Schlentz the shark had her entire foot in it’s mouth.
Schlentz’s best friend Sasha Williamson and her stepdad we able to get Carley to the beach where they immediately called 911. When Carley arrived at the hospital she needed shots of Novocaine in 17 places and 60 stitches.
Schlentz said that, “the Novocaine hurt worse than the actual bite.” After the hospital she returned to the beach and found time to enjoy her vacation.
She has even been able to enjoy her incident, as she was a guest on the CBS Early Show Tuesday morning. According to shark expert Andy Dehart there only been 35 reported shark attack cases off the North Carolina coast.
