While medical malpractice suits are nothing new, one Wichita based doctor and his wife are facing serious legal problems because of their negligent behavior. This week, the Doctor Stephen Schneider and Linda Schneider were found guilty of illegally prescribing pain killers to patients. Linda Schneider also acted as Dr Schneider’s nurse at his private practice. 68 of the patients they gave pills to eventually died of an overdose. The couple has been indicted on unlawful distribution of prescription drugs, healthcare fraud, and money laundering.

According to authorities, the Schneiders were extremely willing to hand out prescription pain killers to anyone who complained of pain and asked for the drugs. These negligent acts included giving pills to known drug abusers. This negligence in giving out prescription drugs led to Schneider having a reputation within the community. Around the Wichita area he was known as the Candyman.

According to the Schneiders, the couple was only trying to help their patients who were dealing with significant pain. However, the court eventually decided that he was, in fact, responsible for hurting his patients and causing the deaths. Dr. Schneider and his wife still await sentencing, but the couple is expected to receive at least 20 years in prison for the act.
