A man who was on a snowmobile has survived after falling more than 400 meters down Mount St Helens. He is currently recovering in the hospital.
51-year old adventurer John Slemp parked his snowmobile away from the edge of Mount St. Helens, and then crawled over to get a look over the edge into the crater of the active volcano.
The edge collapsed though and 51-year old Slemp was sent falling downwards.
He was lucky enough to have the snow break his fall, but it was not over. Form here, he began to slide downward inside the crater for 400 meters.
He tried to catch himself, but continued to fall. Eventually, he was able to crawl over to a steam vent to keep himself warm.
His partners on the adventure went to the authorities for help. A helicopter rescue team got him out of the crater. He tore some knee ligaments, but beyond that is perfectly fine.
