Police officials in the Edmonton region have discovered yet another way that ID is being actively compromised for some users of bank ATM’s in Edmonton.
A man has been seen and photographed by the Economic Crimes Section actively installing pinhole cameras in the light bars over the keypads of ATM’s in the area.
These pinhole cameras potentially could photograph the information including pin numbers of users of affected ATM’s.
Card skimming has become a rising security crime in Canada, and this new method was a surprise for the Economic Crimes police, but at the same time not totally surprising.
This type of device has also been installed overlooking door scanners in the area that grant card or numeric combination access to doorways and entrances to indoors facilities.
This is believed the same man that has been seen in the Calgary area installing devices.
“This is a typical old type scan using new technologies,” said Detective Bob Gaulthier assigned to the Economic Crimes Unit.
“This is a little different because these devices have actually been placed at banks,” said Detective Gaulthier.
At least two different financial institutions in Edmonton and surrounding areas have been affected in this operation, according to Gaultheir.
