The U.S. Department of Justice has ruled that it is ok for Sirius Satellite Radio to go ahead with the $4.6 billion purchase of rival XM Satellite Radio.
The Justice Department concluded that consumers have far too many alternatives for this to be considered anticompetitive in any way.
Sirius and XM were successful in arguing that they compete with normal radio, as well as mobile phones and personal audio players.
Shares rose for both XM and Sirius upon the announcement being reached.
The FCC still has to approve the deal, which was originally announced back in February 2007.
Sirius Chief Executive Mel Karmazin has been pushing very hard for the deal, stating that they had to merge to be able to compete with the likes of the iPod and other devices.
This will likely combine all of the XM and Sirius talent, meaning that the likes of Howard Stern, Martha Stewart, and others will all be on one service.
